Stress and Weight Loss

Wednesday 17 December 2008

We are all guilty to some of eating for reasons other than because we are hungry. We eat because we are stressed, angry, annoyed, stressed again, partying, and just to in.

Probably the worst is . Most of us suffer from relatively high levels of chronic from , kids, partner, or the universe in general. Through evolution our bodies have been conditioned to respond to : they trigger the familiar fight or flight response. This response releases chemicals which lead to fat storage.

With , the body produces more cortisol. Your increases, and most likely your craving for high calorie sweets and . More calorie intake leads to more fat storage, which in turn could lead to insulin . The body can in the short term relieve from high fat/sugary foods. Unfortunately, for chronic , these high fat/sugary foods will lead to weight gain. Obesity leads to higher insulin , and Type 2 diabetes. Insulin increases the likelihood of disease, diabetes and some cancers.

Keeping your levels down should help to keep your weight down as well. Here are a few to reduce your levels.

  • Adequate .

During your body produces the feel good hormones - serotonin and dopamine. These feel good factors help to reduce your . See what happens when a baby is stressed - it cries itself to . Another thing is if your body is not getting enough serotonin, it craves for sugary foods which also provide a quick, but short lived burst of serotonin.

  • Exercise.

High activity aerobic exercise which leaves you breathless also produces levels of serotonin. This is not to say that active have no - just that its normally kept at more manageable levels. Remember that all exercise is good in that you increase your calorie usage. So if you can’t do aerobic exercise just walk around - even just standing is better than sitting. Recently, I watched a programme on the TV channel Five which suggested that you could even chewing gum.

  • Outdoors.

Daylight causes the body to produce some feel good factors as well. Ever noticed that if you spend days scooped up in rooms with artificial light you begin to feel the blues? As much as you can enjoy the outdoor scenery, while passively reducing your levels. Stay out of too much though - cancer is definitely something to avoid. Incidentally, there are artificial lights which are said to provide the full spectrum (or nearly) of the natural daylight. If so, they should be able to boost your feel good hormones as well. If you are always scooped up inside, you might to find out more about them. Personally, I have yet to try them.

  • Touch and be touched.

We all know that being touched and cuddled. Seek out positive interactions with other . Evidence suggests that this produces the social bonding hormone oxytocin, decreases blood pressure and lowers the effects of . This leads you being able to your better.Research also suggests that women from a simple hug (they produce more oxytocin) - it helps to lower their levels. So if you are a woman, get loads of hugs from you care about. If you are a man, don’t begrudge the lady a hug.

  • Sex.

Sex has a number of , one of which is you get a physical . Research has also shown that sex, more so with a long term-partner, produces , oxytocin, and other feel-good hormones.

  • Music. Music does wonders at relieving . There is no music type that equally effective for everyone. Just down and listen to the music of your choice, the music you are comfortable with.

How to Communicate Better in 3 Simple Steps

Monday 8 December 2008

Do you ever leave conversations at wondering why you bothered opening your mouth? Do you sometimes wonder how many times you have to tell somebody something in order for them to get it right? Do you feel that they just don’t listen? If so, then perhaps you need to know how to communicate better.

Communication is one of the biggest problems faced by businesses today, especially by their managers whose it is to solve these ; if you learn how to communicate better you can prevent these communication difficulties happening at all.

You know you are heading for when it appears that the other person has stopped listening to you even before you have finished talking. You will get the hint when you can’t attract everyone’s attention when you speak at meetings or when you are not getting anything back from the other person with whom you are attempting to have a conversation. But, you can’t blame other for this and you can’t change the way that listen to you; you need to improve your own communication skills.

1. Pause for thought

are only capable of listening for so long. That attention span becomes shorter if they disagree with you or become confused, so when you see your ’s eyes glazing over, you know it’s time to stop talking. Hopefully you will have stopped before that point. If you really want to communicate better, you have to listen too. Find out what other are thinking; not only is that the polite thing to do but it also enables you to find out what do not understand or what the are to what you are saying.

2. Keep to the point

State your points clearly and simply with no mistakes in order to be easily understood. Signal what you are going to talk about from your very first sentence by stating your right away. Then the rest of your talk should be the way you expand upon it and illustrate your . You can ask for feedback later or allow brainstorming of ideas if you wish, but make your point clearly first to avoid . At the end, you should summarize any that are made and make each person’s responsibilities for action clear. Make sure each person that needs to do something after the communication has a SMART .

3. Watch your tone

You should speak to others as you wish them to speak to you, without , hostility or sarcasm. Make sure you speak loud enough to be heard but not so loud that your tone appears aggressive. Speak with authority, having thought out your words; you will be much more credible to your . If you have a strong regional accent you should try to soften that and make your and accent more standard, to avoid confusing your who may not be from the same region.

You don’t have to neutralize your accent completely as an accent can be very endearing, but you need to make sure the way you speak is standardized enough to be understood by others. However you do need to learn how to communicate better because communicating well is the best way to ensure that you are listened to and understood by others.

The Basics of Mechanics - Dynamics and Thermodynamics Explained

Sunday 7 December 2008

You who read this, may be an engineer, a , an , a student, or even someone without an engineering background. My is that the general public has little of and even engineers and other professionals often lack in basic insights, in of being advanced in their specific fields. This often leads to unfeasible projects and wrong , based on wrong assumptions, that no computer can correct.

I myself am a graduated engineer on B.Sc level in both mechanics and electrics. Nevertheless, most of what I know worth knowing as an engineer today, I learned from practical experience and backing it up with own theoretical studies afterwards. It forced me to on . When you have the right, the rest is just , where the computer can be very helpful, but don’t let it “think” for you!

If you have no engineering background, why would you need to have some basic of all this, you may ask? Well, we live in a technological society and so we are confronted with technological matters and products, that we need to understand the of to make proper . Ever bought expensive “energy-saving” lamps, while in the same time needing to heat your ? Do you think hydrogen and/or fuel cells are energy sources? Do you think energy can be produced and consumed? Would you invest in solar panels, or other technology for your ? The more these kinds of things apply on you, the more you need to read this article.

The Laws of Newton

The metric, or SI system of units is based on the laws of Newton and so is most of modern mechanics and dynamics. They are essential for basic understanding:

  • 1. A mass object persists in its momentary motion to speed and direction, unless it is forced to change it by external forces working on it.
  • 2. The acceleration of an object is proportional with the force F working on it and inverse proportional with its mass m. Hence, the acting force is given by: F = m.a
  • 3. A force acting on an object, will yield a counter force of the same strength in the opposite direction: action = reaction.

Although these laws sound simple, they are often wrongly applied, or overlooked. Especially the third law appears to be the most fundamental one, still not fully understood by Science and subject for discussions on the highest levels (how can you move a table for example, as it pushes back with the same force?).

Power and Energy.

Power and energy are very often mixed up. For example a lightning, causing a tree to split into half, is very powerful, but it has very little energy, because it lasted only a fraction of a second. Energy is the range of power and time. Power is expressed in Watt and energy in Joule - 1 Watt thus is 1 Joule per second, inversely 1 J = 1 Ws (Watt second). If you during one hour would apply a power of 1000 Watt (1 kW = 1 kJ/s), which approximately is what a flat iron takes, the energy involved is 1 kWh and this is thus equal to 3600 kJ. If you instead would develop that energy in one second, the power becomes 3600 kW, or 3.6 MW - a small power plant! If thus a lightning would have a power of say 10 GW and lasted 1 millisecond (it looks much longer, because of the glowing air around it), it contained an amount of energy of just 10 MJ = 10,000 kJ, not more than 2.8 kWh, or to power a flat iron for around three hours! If you in would read dimensions like kilowatt per hour, or horsepower per hour, you can know that the author has no idea what he/she is talking about.

Energy is also the range of force and traveled way. If you lift up a mass of 1 kg to a height of 1 meter, the force needed for that is the range of mass and gravity acceleration, as per Newton’s second law. On , gravity acceleration is 9.8 meter per second square, which we can round to 10. The lifting force then becomes 10 kilogram meter per second square, which is called the Newton (N) and the done is then 10 Nm (Newton meter), which is 10 Joule: 1 J = 1 Nm.

The same confusing exists around temperature and energy. What would you rather have in your hand, a 1 inch red glowing sewing needle, or a 4 inch red glowing bolt? Though both have the same temperature, the needle will just cause you a blister, whereas with the bolt, you won’t have a hand any more. The bolt contains much more energy (more mass) than the needle and that makes the difference, not the temperature.

If you would be interested in a solar panel to heat water in your , the temperature it can yield is therefore not that important. You pay for energy instead and that is what you want to save on. Ideally, a solar water heater should on a low temperature, so it doesn’t loose too much heat through its insulation and produce a larger water flow instead. You then save more energy = , because of the higher efficiency on which your solar panel works. To reach your desired water temperature in the kitchen and bathroom, you can heat additionally with say an electrical heater. Combination with a heat pump, also taking up heat from your warm waste water, would give the absolute best results (but high installation costs). Read more about that at the end of this article.

However, manufacturers of solar panels optimize on temperature, which is a good selling argument for the energy-unaware public. At higher temperatures, the size and thus the costs of the whole installation, including storage , become lower, which also sells better. They don’t talk very much, or at all about efficiency, being the between how much solar energy hits the solar panel and how much of that you can use in the end. They talk about capacity instead - solar energy is “free”!

Next to consider is Pressure. Usually it is that of a fluid, like a gas. It is expressed in Pascal (Pa) which is force (N) per unit of area and thus 1 Pa = 1 N/sqm (Newton per square meter). at is roughly 100 kPa, thus 100,000 N/sqm. In technical descriptions it is also often called the bar - 1 bar is thus . Pressure can also be seen as in materials, tension. In the SI system of units, pressure and tension are thus both expressed in Pascal.

Then there is -pressure. This is what makes a knife . The sharper a knife, the smaller its edge area (A) is and for a given force (F), the -pressure (F/A) becomes larger, also expressed in Pascal. With this, all units in the SI-system are given. It has only three basic units, the kg for mass, the meter for length/distance and the second for time. No are needed

Circular Motions.

From Newton’s third law follows the that on an object in mechanical rotation, two forces are working, a centripetal one, pulling the objects towards the center of rotation, and a centrifugal one, tending to push it out radially away from that center. If the mechanical with the center of rotation suddenly is broken, in that very moment no forces are working on the object any longer and thus it will move as per Newton’s first law, meaning it keeps its speed in the direction it had in the moment just before losing . That speed was directed tangentially and thus the object will “fly out” in the tangential direction, not radially. In fact, centrifugal forces do not exist, because then there would be no resulting force to keep an object in its circular path - only the centripetal force exists. This is a hot discussion point in Science - Newton’s third law.

Hence, when you are in a car that makes a sharp curve, your body does not push against the inside of the car (centrifugal), but the inside of the car pushes your body into the curve (centripetal). As per Newton’s first law, your body wants to keep its direction of motion, straight , just before entering the curve - it’s called . There is only one force, the centripetal one (free motions in gravitational fields, such as orbits of planets and satellites, are described in General Relativity, which we won’t discuss here).

From this follows the of “inertial” systems, which are frames of reference in which Newton’s laws are valid. An accelerated system is thus not an inertial system, because motions described in it, would not follow Newtonian laws. This causes a severe point of , as follows:

If you are an of “fantastic” mechanical machines, your really should understand the implements of . (p) is the amount of motion, being the range of speed (v) and mass (m), which is equal to the range of working force (F) and the (t): F.t = m.v = p. An has a direction, which (kinetic) energy has not and therefore impulses can have a positive or a negative sign between opposite directions of motion. Because is a function of force (the time-derivative of it), Newton’s third law requires that the sum of all impulses of components within a system (machine) must be zero. However, many inventors, not being aware of this, “create” a resulting , that accelerates the system.

What they do is mixing up reference systems and with energy. If you consider a mechanical system (machine), that has a certain total mass, but also internally parts, the resulting of those parts, the sum of all impulses, will be zero relative the system’s center of gravity, but not necessarily relative a resting frame of reference (an observer) in which the whole system (machine) may be (at constant speed). The sum of kinetic energy of all the internally parts, is of course a positive value (negative energy is less than nothing). This value is the system’s internal (kinetic) energy. Since this internal energy is needed to keep the internal parts , there cannot be any energy left to accelerate the system (machine) as a whole. On the , energy must be applied all the time to overcome the that the internally parts are subjected to, otherwise they would come to a halt. This applied energy converts to heat.

Sadly, there are several patents on according designs, claiming to be “inertial drives” for space-ships or whatever. Their inventors, some of which may have ruined their private economies on this, were not confident with the of dynamics, as outlined above. See some of those unfortunate examples here: http://jnaudin.free.fr/html/IPEmain.htm

Mechanical Engineering Concepts

Now, imagine you had a ball that is perfectly spherical and a table that is perfectly smooth, so when the ball is placed on the table, the area becomes a dimensionless point - zero whatever. Then the -pressure F/0 becomes infinite, regardless how light the ball is - something must break. No material could withstand an infinite -pressure and from this follows that not even with the most fantastic materials, yet to be developed, a frictionless machine could ever be built (that would require ideal point and line contacts).

Some inventors have a problem with that, like a patent I once saw, where a 15 cm (6 inch) diameter cylinder was rotating at 1500 rpm in a somewhat larger cylinder, supported by a number of smaller rollers in the size of just a few millimeters - it looked like a ball- in cross section. These rollers would rotate at roughly 50,000 rpm. You look in any table what the admissible speeds are and you would see that this design exceeds the limits by far; self-destruct through !

Another problem that many inventors have is judging leakage potential. Leakage is a function of pressure ratio, not of pressure difference and it varies to the third power with the clearance between the boundaries. It means that the same sealing device, that would leak in an however deep submerged submarine, would leak more in a space craft, because there the pressure ratio to vacuum is infinite - many don’t seem to know that. In addition, even less known, is that the best sealing is obtained with a single, unbroken sealing line, ideally a circle.

Therefore, the reciprocating circular piston machine will always prevail over any rotational displacement concept, that contains several broken (discontinuous) sealing lines. These rotational concepts can be used and are used in low-duty applications, where they have their advantages, such as in air-driven hand tools, industrial compressors, etc, but not in heavy-duty combustion engines. This is why the Wankel never became , except a few years in from German NSU, that went bankrupt on it in the 1970-ies.

One can see the most ‘horrible’ designs in various patents, the worst I saw being an engine, consisting of a torus shaped tube, with a slot over its inner length to let through a piston rod, attached to a circular piston in that torus, while flat plates were sliding radially in and out the torus to form alternate compression and expansion chambers - at best a good cream-wiper (but it got a medal in an inventors contest - its glorious funeral)!

Many inventors have tried to find a linear transmission, that can replace the pendulous crankshaft. It has various disadvantages, such as causing vibrations of higher order, but most of all causing side-forces on the pistons, resulting in excessive wear and leakage there. I once read a statement from a development manager at Volkswagen in Germany, that the crank mechanism alone stands for 20% of the fuel consumption. All alternative designs I have seen, indeed convert the linear piston motion into a rotating one on the shaft and without causing side forces on the piston, but instead they generate the same or higher side forces on sliding parts elsewhere in the design, causing excessive and wear there - definitely no fuel savings. I have found a design that does not contain any sliding parts, but consists of rotating components only (I got the idea, when I was with my kids in a merry-go-round). Had I only come up with this a good 100 years ago, I could have made it, but now the pendulous crankshaft is so well established in automated production lines, that it can’t be changed any more. I almost hade it made with Compair-Reavel in the UK, around 20 years ago, but also they found it in the end too costly too change their production line - my bad luck!

Thermodynamics

Another basic thing, often misunderstood, is that energy can’t be “used up”. Surely, the you put in your car is used up, but the energy it developed is still there, to stay around for all eternity. All the chemical energy that was stored in the original fuel, is converted to heat. at high temperatures in the car’s engine, but then decaying to heat at ambient temperature. The rest is also converted to heat by , the on the road, the transmission, air , etc. All energy that we “use” with our technology, finally decays to heat at ambient temperature, even the light from your lamps at does that.

So is there the term “waste heat”, as opposed to “useful heat”.What is useful? Take “energy-saving” lamps for example. If you live in a cold , where you have to heat your , a normal hot glowing light bulb actually delivers 100% useful energy, 5% of which is light, the rest is heat, that helps heating your , but this is not what you are told. Only the 5% light is brought forward as “useful” and you are told that you are “wasting” 95% with a normal glow bulb. Only in warm climates, especially third-world countries with very expensive electricity, or in cooled rooms, the use of energy-saving lamps makes sense!

The misconception by the public is that useful energy is “consumed” and waste energy is not. The real situation is that the useful energy is just used, but not “consumed” and is wasted after usage just the same. That’s why your energy bill comes back every month - nothing of what you used, is left. Therefore you read everywhere about “energy production” and “energy consumption”, not in the least used by decision makers in energy politics! It indicates that there is no basic understanding in public society, what energy is about and so unfeasible projects are initiated, wasting time and (your ) .

The First Law of Thermodynamics says that energy cannot be created (produced), nor destroyed (consumed). We can only convert energy from one form to an other and the Second Law of Thermodynamics says that it all finally must decay to heat at ambient temperature and so it does. Even though many know this, that is end of story for them, as far as the First Law is concerned. However, the scientific definition of the First Law says that if you add energy to a system to bring it in an other condition, you must remove the same amount of energy to bring it back in the original condition. Naturally, because if we could remove more, energy would be created from nothing and if less, energy would disappear into nothing. This formulation has great consequences, as follows:

Let’s consider an ideal hydrogen (water) engine, by which we pour water in it on one side and the same water AND useful mechanical energy comes out on the other side. Because the engine returns the same water as was applied ( as , but than condensing to water at ambient temperature), there cannot be a net output from the engine - it would have been created from nothing. If there is an output anyway, this means that the according energy had to be applied as well, not only the water. Indeed, we must apply energy to split the water in hydrogen and oxygen. If that could be done at an efficiency of 100% (electrolysis has only 60%), then that energy could appear as mechanical on the shaft. This then means that the hydrogen only was an energy converter, definitely not an energy source!

Hydrogen does not occur in free form on , like fossil fuels do and therefore hydrogen can never be an energy source. Give me a for every article that says different and I will be well off!If there would be a method to obtain free hydrogen at considerably less energy input than what combustion with oxygen gives in output, yes, then it would become an energy source, but such a method has not yet been found.

Instead of splitting water, hydrogen can be obtained from natural gases, such as methane. It shows however that the overall efficiency of such a hydrogen loop in a combustion engine would have a somewhat lower overall efficiency than using the natural gas (or bio-gas) directly in a combustion engine. Moreover, hydrogen is a very tricky gas to store and to handle. Not only is it very explosive, but it tends to exude through most metals as well. It is very voluminous, around ten times more than air and thus needs to be brought on high pressures to keep the volume down and that takes a of compression energy. Liquefying it would even take more energy, plus a temperature problem for storage as well. There are materials that can absorb hydrogen gas at a lower temperature and give it off again at a higher temperature, surely the better way, but also not very and practical in a distribution system. All together, there is no in hydrogen engines, but it may have an environmental - the only viable argument for using it, provided the consumer wants to pay the higher costs, do you?

The same can be said from fuel cells, working on hydrogen - they produce water () and need a steady supply offresh hydrogen and oxygen to continuously- whereto get how? Yes, the energy that fuel cells are supposed to “produce”, originally came from fossil fuels to manufacture the input hydrogen. Can we call that “non-pollutant” energy? A fuel cell is NOT an energy source, just an energy converter.

The importance of using spontaneity in physical processes is largely unknown, because it has to do with entropy, something not explained very well in schools. So I had to learn in practice, by , that if you want to separate fluids from each other, you must try to find a design by which this happens as spontaneously as possible, for example with “smart” piping, rather than using filters. The more you try to force it about with various design details, the more you will lose in efficiency - you “produce” entropy as it wrongly is called. The more you force about a process (introduce “irreversibilities”, as it is called correctly), the greater the change of entropy is, the lower the efficiency becomes. Entropy is an essential part of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, not to say the whole of it, but yet there is no general agreement among , what entropy actually is - very confusing.

The Second Law is actually not a “real” law, because it is based on observations only, not on any physical . This means that if the observations would change, the Second Law would have to change too, but this hasn’t happened yet, which makes it a law. In we experience that most things don’t happen spontaneously, only accidents, or coincidences in general, do (”Murphy’s Law”). If we want things to happen, we usually have to do for it. Hence we could formulate the Second Law as: “for free only the goes up”. On the internet, this formulation of the Second Law is widely violated by millions of web sites, trying to let you believe that for a small , you can become rich very soon. But that is not engineering (rather “”), so I leave you with that.

In engineering, especially when it comes to sources, the Second Law is also widely violated, or rather ignored. Oh yes, solar energy is free, but you can’t use it for free, why not? Because it is widely spread in Nature and thus the effort to collect it into one point of usage and to present it in a usable form, is very large and you have to pay for that effort. Using fossil fuels is cheaper and easier and that’s what we do instead. The same would be valid for nuclear power, but there the “” have been successful to obstruct it - with thanks from the Arab oil sheiks.

is something the Second Law is very much against, because it wants to spread it out in the environment, not to collect it for our use. Therefore these sources are high-entropy ones, meaning you must do a of to make use of them (low efficiency). There is one exception though and that is hydro-electric power. The forces of nature actually do all the for us, by collecting rain water in high situated reservoirs, ready for us to use; they are low-entropy sources. But also here the “” choose to favor the oil sheikhs instead.

Next would be heat pumps, which are inverted refrigerators. A heat pump absorbs heat from the environment, usually from the ambient air, by generating a cold surface there. This surface is small, but it actually collects heat from large, remote areas, brought by the wind. Also here, the forces of nature do the collecting for us, a second exception on the rule (compare with a storm blowing aside of your wind propeller, without affecting it, or the burning a hole in the ground next to your solar panel, also without affecting it).

The heat pump, as the name says, pumps up the ambient heat to a higher temperature that we can use, for example to heat water. Also its drive power is given off as heat at usage temperature, is thus no loss (where it is in a refrigerator) and so a heat pump can give off between 3 and 4 times more energy than what it takes to run it. If all the of dollars that to date and ongoing are wasted on wind propellers and solar collectors of various kinds, would have been used to provide all with heat pumps, many power plants could have been shut down by now and no more oil would be burned in homes for heating. This however is a with modification. A huge polluting industry, likely using fossil fuels, would be behind all those heat pumps, but that would be the same also for wind propellers, solar panels and the production of hydrogen and fuel cells, all having to be financed by the and making profit as well - the Second Law all right:”For free, only the goes up”

Breathing Tools To Help Control Asthma and Sleep Apnea And Other Breathing Conditions

Sunday 30 November 2008

The Russians do quite well in Olympic swimming, and if one notices, it is apparent that while some others are huffing and puffing through their mouths, many Russian athletes appear to practice exercises similar to Buteyko exercises before sports performances. Just as eating a bowl of spaghetti 15 minutes before an event would be detrimental, so is increasing the breathing. The Russian Natalia Molchanova has broken almost all categories of freediving records, and it is interesting to watch her breathing before a dive, as well as after a dive. Static Apnea also includes minimizing breath.

To put it simply, Buteyko exercises are a set of tools, which allow asthmatics and others who are prone to hypocapnia (deficiency of carbon dioxide in the blood resulting from hyperventilation) caused by overbreathing, to return to stasis without (or with fewer) drugs, under medical supervision. Buteyko breathing exercises recalibrate the baroreceptors and parasympathetic nervous system, allowing for a lower breathing , and more normalized CO2, carbonate and pH levels in the blood, allowing the tissues to utilize oxygen better. Remember using paper bags to stabilize asthmatics? (Do not breathe into a bag without medical supervision!)

Years ago I took a confined space class, and we took turns blowing into an O2 detector after holding our breaths. Most trainees yielded 16-18% O2. I blew a 14% since I held my breath much longer. Assuming that the office had ~19% O2, this taught me that normal breathing is not very efficient, and perhaps has to be inefficient to allow for sufficient tensile strength of lung and vascular tissue, and delicate balance of blood chemicals. It occurred to me that more volume of air passing through the lungs does not necessarily mean that more oxygen is being passed to the bloodstream.

Two days after in the Pacific ocean, I was hiking in the snow up Cotopaxi at about 16,000′ (+4800m) above . My extremely , but asthma-prone girlfriend began having shortness of breath. I also became light headed, and began experimenting with my breath as I trekked up the . Several such times I inhaled deeply and compressed my chest with my intercostal (rib) muscles for a long moment. This seemed to help increase my consciousness even after I released the breath, and I realized that I had the power to change my physiologic state quite simply. It became clear to me how the mechanics of overbreathing/ heavy breathing and the partial pressure dynamics (elaborated by Buteyko and ) may have much to do with the asthmatic response.

Many now agree that overconsumption of (overeating) does not guarantee more to the tissues, but not many seem to consider respiration in the respiration equation, that overbreathing may play a in respiratory “disease.” In fact, some no longer check respiration during an exam. It is commonly known that increased obesity results in dysfunction, large meals cause blood sugar spikes and accelerators (dieting drugs and supplements) due not increase stasis in tissues, making loss of fat more difficult in the long term. Similarly, overbreathing causes a spiraling of processes which decrease alvioli efficiency, disrupting breathing “calibration” and oxygenation of other tissues, decreasing health and oxygenation. Despite more oxygen entering the lungs, because of the low CO2 level, less oxygen actually makes it to the cells that need it. This overbreathing could be triggered by , , nasal congestion, allergies and other triggers and factors which cause to breathe more frequently and deeply than their body would otherwise. One problem of low CO2 levels is a scientific hypothesis proposed by Artour Rakhimov, PhD, that chronic hyperventilation promotes disease and cancer. Previous research has suggested that chronic hyperventilation washes out CO2 from each cell of the organism. Since CO2 is a dilator of small blood vessels, low CO2 concentrations lead to the constrictions of arterioles causing problems with blood and oxygen delivery.

In addition, low CO2 values cause inability of red blood cells to efficiently release whatever little oxygen they bring (the suppressed Bohr effect). The final outcome is hypoxia in the tissues, including the vital organs.

Some argue that “We are under constant because we don’t breathe enough,” without really measuring the actual volume of gases inhaled. Typically respiratory and volume increase when increases. Even the Johnson & Johnson Company sponsored research by University of Miami School of Medicine (Director Tiffany Field, Ph.D.) shows that massage increased pulmonary function in asthma patients. Once I was at the doctor, and a nurse assistant checked my pulse, bp and respiratory : the assistant reported that I had 18 breaths per minute, however I measured 6-7 breaths. I asked how she measured it, and she stated simply that “everyone has 18-20 breaths.” Such inaccuracy may lead to wrong conclusions by medical staff.

In 2005, the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine reported that “Hypocapnic but Not Metabolic Alkalosis Impairs Alveolar Fluid Reabsorption.” What this means is that a low CO2 level causes blood pH to change, and more fluid build up in the lungs. Thus the more a person breathes, the more CO2escapes, and more fluid may build up in the lungs. Buteyko theory includes the facts of the body’s attempts to regulate carbonates and alkalinity.

Although Buteyko Therapy originated in the Ukraine Forty years ago, and has gained medical acceptance in Russia, Australia, Asia and England, it remains a seldom used “alternative” treatment in the USA. My , John Harris, brought the first Buteyko Therapy Practitioner to the USA in the 1980’s: Rosalba Courtney, ND, DO, DipAc, CA, an Australian osteopath, naturopath, California-certified acupuncturist, and chairperson of the Australasian Buteyko Association. The practice has been taught to many practitioners and countless patients who, under medical supervision, have overcome much or all of their dependence on asthma medications. John is said to breathe 3/min at rest, and 1/min during .

Most practices promote slowed breathing, and can accomplish these effects, when breathing is slowed more in ratio to the metabolic . Vocalizing the typical “oum” slowly while breathing through the nose only, will slow the breathing, and CO2 levels can stabilize toward a normal level. It is the respiratory and partial pressures that mainly how much O2 in the lungs will pass into the blood. Proper singing and playing wind instruments may have similar effects, partly due to the increased partial pressure inside the lungs.

Most Pilates trainers, Yoga instructors and even physicians speak of shallow and deep breathing, but frequently don’t specify breathing , or encourage increased . Some yoga classes sound like an aerospace wind tunnel. However experienced yogis are rarely seen panting, and even with Ujjayi Pranayama, they breathe s-l-o-w-l-y, which along with the of Ujjayi, causes partial pressure inside the lungs to absorb more of the oxygen while keeping enough carbon dioxide to maintain balance. Have you ever seen a Buddhist monk panting? Have you noticed that healthy older do not breathe noticeably?

By slowing breathing to more fully utilize O2 efficiency and not depleting CO2 levels necessary for proper muscle and lung physiology, Buteyko breathing is said to enhance performance. Traditional Pilates and certain specific yoga practices that encourage faster breathing rates thus may cause an opposite effect. After I began to master these techniques, my breathing slowed during my workouts, and my efficiency increased. I learned that if my mouth would open during a run, it was time to back off, slow the exhale, until my efficiency increased again. Once you open the mouth, the breathing efficiency goes down the toilet. Now if a sprint is required, forget the rules, and when activity slows, then immediately slow the breath. Watch a video of Natalia Molchanova, world record freediver, and see how slowly she breathes after swimming under water for several minutes. I have also found that “catching” the breath only throws the balance off.

Since this also affects blood pressure, a US Patent has been issued for use to hypertension. The American Lung Association has informed me that since most research has been in Russia and Australia, they are waiting for more USA trials on Buteyko before they comment or promote it for asthma.

One day I was examining the lungs of a cadaver and noticed that significantly diseased lungs with a fraction of their original available surface area still kept the person alive. Later that day as I was swimming (controlled breathing exercise, right?) I experimented with different breathing depths and rates, and thought of Buteyko’s theory, and that wide ranges of breathing patterns may have strong effects on what the lungs pass to and from the bloodstream, and resultant physiological responses. Apparently humans are overdesigned in many ways, thus improper function may occur for long before symptoms become apparent, and finally nudge a person to submit to crisis- allopathy.

About ten months after NPR, and eight months after Oprah Winfrey started a neti bowl craze, I noticed that neti bowls were more popular on the net, but at a drugstore I asked two pharmacists for “nasal irrigation such as neti bowl or neti pot” and they did not know what it was. I was promptly shown the medications section, and then I found and showed the pharmacist a plastic irrigation bottle which the store carried.

One day I was swimming in the ocean with a tight wetsuit for about 45 minutes, I then swam to the beach and all of a sudden, I noticed that my breathing was still rapid although my effort was decreasing as I rode some in. I began to overventilate, and experienced my first taste of pre-asthmatic behavior.

I was in a yoga class, and the instructor was discussing Pranic Breathing. He said that he would demonstrate, but that it may cause him to start coughing. I wondered why anyone would practice a breathing type that would cause coughing?

At the 2007 IDEA Conference, I began a test for O2/ CO2 output, but the test was suspended because the machine kept turning off due to my breathing of 6-7 breaths per minute. The tester stated that I had to breathe at least 10 breaths per minute to keep the machine on! I decided to abandon the test.

Manual Bodywork can also help stabilize body systems by assisting the parasympathetic system to . Nevertheless, always consult a medical doctor before beginning or changing an exercise or treatment program, or when you have new symptoms.

The Tweezer Forex Signal - How To Trade It

Friday 28 November 2008

Certain formations on Japanese charts can provide a reliable if you interpret them right and realize the limitations of candlesticks in the exchange .

formations particularly well in some where there are clearly defined opening and closing such as the and equity . The Forex on the other hand is a 24 hour place that runs for nearly six days a week and therefore it doesn’t have the distinct open and close timings that make Japanese formations such significant indicators.

However, there is a significant formation that can be used as a taking into the open closing times of various (New York, European, Asian ) and the overlapping times when reaction is more pronounced.

This is commonly called the Tweezer . It consists of two candles side by side with short bodies at the base and long wicks that extend upward. The two candles can be either identical in or they may simply have approximately the same size body and wick. Conversely they can be the other way, a short body at the top with long wicks extending downward.

WHY can the tweezer candle formation be a significant ?

It helps to understand what is represented by a . There is a need to go behind the scenes and perceive what is actually going on in the .

Every candle represents a battle between the bears and the bulls, struggling to gain dominance. In the case of a tweezer candle formation at the top of a price move, the bulls took price up to a certain level but were unable to hold it and price came back.

In the second candle period, the bulls again tried to take price up but only succeeded in reaching the high of the previous candle and again their efforts failed with price coming back. A new high was reached, then an attempt made to pass it which failed, the bears wresting from the bulls.

If a tweezer formation is seen at the end of a large downward move in price, then the opposite is true. The bears have not been able to maintain new and the bulls have wrested .

The tweezer formation as a reliable is conditional however on other factors.

WHEN can the tweezer candle formation be a significant ?

It is probably unwise to just take a tweezer formation as an instant to go long if the tweezers form at the top of a run up in price or short in a drop in price. A reliable involves many factors not just one.

Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  • Tweezer formations on higher time frames (1 hour, 4 hour) are more significant. At times a tweezer on a 15 minute chart can provide a good if it coincides with other factors mentioned below.
  • Tweezer formations can be significant when they come at a key level of or support, or if they are on a pivot line, or a Fibonacci retracement or extension level.
  • Tweezer formations are not such a reliable if they come in a pattern when price is caught in a channel.
  • Tweezer formations can be significant if they come at the end of a major run in price that is equal to or exceeds the average daily range. If you pull up your Average True Range indicator and see what the average has been for that pair for the last five days and compare it with the , if price has already moved by the average number of and you now see a tweezer formation, there is a higher you can safely enter a trade in the opposite direction.
  • Tweezer formations can also be a reliable if you take into the average daily range and the time of day when the tweezer formation appears. If it appears at the close of the London session for example, or the end of the New York session, it is unlikely price is going to go much farther for the remainder of that day. The likelihood is price will retrace and that is where you can catch some good .

Trying to find the perfect is a futile exercise as no such signal exists. However, there are certain indicators that when put together can constitute a reliable that works more times than it fails.

Learn to recognize the tweezer formation. Take note of where it appears in relation to price action, check the time of day, look at your other favorite indicators, and if they all line up, pull the trigger!

Forex Trading Strategies - A Timeless Strategy For Big Gains in 30 Minutes a Day

Thursday 27 November 2008

Here we are going to look at one of the strategies which you can use to make big . This forex is simple to understand, works, will continue to and finally and best of all, it can make you triple digit gains in less than 30 minutes a day…

Many traders want to buy a forex system and end up buying useless automated for forex systems which are simply back tested - in simple that means made up, knowing the closing prices. Well that’s not hard not knowing of course is and is the challenge of forex .

Now, many traders think building a system is hard but its not anyone can do it and it also doesn’t have to be complicated as simple systems best and always have.

The salient points of a simple robust system are enclosed.

The forex which is easy to understand is breakout .

Breakouts

Fact: Most new trends start from new highs or and if you go with them, you can get in on all the major trends and pile up big gains.

Not all breakouts are the same though and you must make sure the or support has been tested several times, it’s been tested in several different time frames and the considers the level important. If it breaks that means the break will continue.

Most Traders Cant trade Breakouts!

Most traders can’t trade breakouts, because they want to get in at a better price and wait for the pullback but a look at any shows - when a big break occurs the price does NOT pullback.

The who waits continues to wait as the trade sails over the horizon piling up thousands or tens of and their not in!

Going with these breaks is the way to make and shows it works.

Confirmation

breakouts is not predicting, it’s simply reacting to price change and when a breakout occurs, you need to confirm the break and check if price momentum is accelerating - if it is you can enter with the on your side.

For this you need some momentum indicators to confirm the move.

We have discussed these more fully in our other articles but here, we just want to that velocity of price MUST be accelerating, to have the on your side when you execute your signal.

Two great indicators are the and the stochastic so look them up or see our other articles.

Management and the key to Triple Digit Gains…

Placing your stop is easy - behind the breakout point, the hard part is trailing the stop.

If it’s a valid breakout, then you may have a that can last for weeks, months or years and you need to trail your stop far enough back, so you don’t get stopped out of the trade to soon.

The is you need to give the room to breathe, or you will never make the big - accept short term drawdown in open equity and keep your eye on the bigger prize.

A good way to do this is to wait until the trade is underway and trail with the stop behind the 40 day average.

Simple and Effective

The above is not designed for action, it relies on and only picking high valid breakouts and you will probably get a few each month.

The system is timeless and any chart will show you breakout works and with a simple such as the above, you could soon be making triple digit gains.

It’s also easy to understand which means you will have in it and be able to follow it with . In forex , and a simple robust method equals .

The Forex Trading Strategy to Find the TRUE Support and Resistance Areas

Friday 21 November 2008

If you have been around long enough in the forex , I’m sure you have probably heard of these indicators that you can just put on your charts that will tell you where the support and area. These are usually known as pivot indicators. They are based on a mathematical formula.

I used these when I first started forex, because it seemed like a good idea to find out what were some of the important areas that would be key to the . I noticed it wasn’t that effective. Occasionally there would be some times when the price would hit a support line and go back up or hit a line and come back down. But they were few and far between. There wasn’t a very strong correlation between these supposed support and areas and what the price was doing.

There is a good for that. Using a formula is completely random!

It didn’t dawn on me until I got rid of all my indicators that price action dictates the key support and areas of the . It happens every hour, day, month, year. There are are pivotal areas for each . YOU have to find them. An indicator or formula isn’t going to get it done.

It’s all in your charts. A simple bar chart can tell you the ’s behavior, and what other traders are really looking for as far as where will or where it will take off. Remember your eyes are your best indicator.

John Templeton has been a successful forex after learning forex trading through the use of price action. Once he understood that all he needed to was on a plain chart with no indicators, his soared.

So, You Want to Be a Public Speaker?

Tuesday 18 November 2008

Public speaking is a curiosity; most either it… or are absolutely terrified of it.

Some are physically ill just saying their name in front of a group… while others will wrestle you to the ground to rip a microphone from your hand.

Over the years I have done somewhere over three thousand presentations nationally and internationally (including , educational , sporting teams, schools and fitness industry ).

And at least five of those talks were good.

Alright, three.

I get emails every day asking me how I got to do what I do and what I might have to offer the would-be public speaker.

So rather than re-writing the same reply nineteen thousand times over the next ten years, I thought I might make my life easier and formalise my thoughts on the matter with a post.

Okay, pens poised.
(or printers turned on).

Here we go… Public Speaking 101:

1. Decide what kind of speaker you want to be:

Find your public speaking ; what are you good at?

What are you suited to?

What are you passionate about?

Who do you want your to be?

What is your key message; your mission?

Do you want to do it professionally?

Are you an educator… “Okay class, let’s take a look at the physiological of progressive for the elderly”

Are you a … “I’m not interested in your comfort or enjoyment, I’m interested in results… now stop whining, stop bleeding and get up off the floor!!”
(Mmm… maybe that’s a masochist!)

Are you an entertainer… “hey guys, a happened on the way here tonight… “

2. Have a U.S.P.

In we want something which separates us from our competitors; we call this a . If you want a successful as a speaker then you need to give a to want to utilise your services. always have options… so we want to be the best option (eventually)… or a better option at least.

3. Spend writing, preparing and committing your presentations to .
You need to (1) have great content (fresh, interesting, challenging, stimulating, confronting, funny, relevant) and (2) you need to know your inside-out.
The better you know your material, the more relaxed you will be in front of your group.

Looking at notes repeatedly while you speak… not cool.

4. Practice often.

In the car.

In front of the mirror.

To your dog, cat, rabbit… plants!

Recruit an … your family perhaps.

5. Get feedback.

When you do any presentation (even if it’s a dry run in front of or family) ask for constructive feedback. Don’t be precious and consciously on your weaknesses.

6. Film your presentation.

Want some real ?… watch yourself on film.
The first time I saw myself on video (it was the 80’s) I was totally weirded out by all of my little public speaking idiosyncrasies and habits… I repeated myself, I spoke too fast, I spoke with my back to the (as I wrote on a board), I kept rolling up my sleeves in this kind of unconscious nervous little ritual thingy (embarrassing) and my finish was about as exciting and empowering as .

I hated watching myself.

But what it did was let me see what everyone else sees.

Not a particularly comfortable process but a valuable one.

I instantly became a better presenter after that.

(I didn’t want to put anyone through that pain again).

7. Do freebies.

Every public speaker has done hundreds of freebies along the way.
You can only develop a skill… by practising that skill.
Reading about, talking about and thinking about public speaking doesn’t improve your actual skills…. public speaking improves your public speaking skills.

8. Be able to present on different topics… or at least of the same topic.

If you can speak (competently) on a broad range of , you are more likely to be in demand.

9. Study other speakers.

Next time you watch another (quality) public speaker, take a look at the process through the eyes of a student public speaker; you will learn a bunch.
Watch how they engage their , their timing, their use of (appropriate) humour, how they dress, how they incorporate their audio-visual , how they start, how they conclude.

10. Create opportunities

“So Sam, tell me a bit about yourself…”

“Well I actually do a bit of public speaking in the health and fitness area…”

“Hey that’s fantastic… how would you like to talk to my team of fat execs?”

11. Join a public speaking organisation

There are some great (like toastmasters) who get like-minded together and help them develop their public speaking skills and careers.

12. Don’t be impatient.

If public speaking is something that you might want to do long term, don’t be impatient.
Spend adequate time learning, watching, researching, practising and developing before you your first seat auditorium.
Be ambitious.
And realistic.
And patient.

13. Know your .

Research the company, organisation, group that you’re speaking to.
What kind of group are they?
Will there be thirty or three hundred in the ?
Are they corporates, are they truck drivers, are they predominantly male or female, are they kids, are they students… have they been presented to before?
Talk to the organiser (the person who gave you the ) and get some into your .

14. Use audio-visual aids when appropriate and relevant.

The occasional well-placed video or slide can be a valuable addition to a presentation and can provide you with a nice opportunity to re-group, collect your thoughts and take a look at your .
This concept is not to be confused with the mindlessly-boring presenter who feels compelled to base his entire presentation around a series of slides, photographs, charts and statistical tables.
(all high-lighted with his laser gizmo).

If I see you doing that, I’ll hurt you.

15. Don’t your material.

Don’t talk too fast, don’t try and present too much information and don’t have too many slides (if you are doing a power-point presentation). Not too long ago I sat in a presentation where the speaker had over forty slides for a forty minute presentation.
It was a and it hurt my .

16. Have a great finish.

Leave them inspired, challenged, excited, curious and impressed.

There you have it; Craig’s mini-seminar on public speaking.
I hope you found it interesting and valuable.

Forex Currency Trading Systems - The Fibs Ain’t No Lie - A Systems Approach to Trading the Forex

Tuesday 28 October 2008

When it comes to the Forex having a system is the number one key to . Making as “mechanical” as possible is the only way to sanely trade a where the traders and greed are always in play.

This is where a system shines. Having a system that says when “A” happens you automatically execute trade “B.” This kind of system has a great effect at removing much of our emotional .

How The Systems

As you probably know, Forex is based on the of one to another - called pairs. And these pairs are used to create a trade. For instance you believe that the Euro is due to rise against the - or said another way - you believe the Euro is strong and the US is weak. Based on this you would expect to see the Euro rise in value over the and if it did you would profit.

So the pair you would be is the EUR/USD pair where the first listed, in this case the Euro is called the base . The second, in this case the US , is called the counter or quote . Each pair is quoted with a single number that expresses the between the pairs. So if a quote of 1.4525 were quoted that would mean that it would take 1.4525 Dollars to exchange for a single Euro.

The Fibs

Fibonacci, often called the fibs, are a method of gaining some measure of predictive pricing in the Forex . They are based on the famed number sequence developed by a mathematician named, you guessed it, Fibonacci. The sequence that he developed is a sum where each of the two preceding numbers are added to form the next in the sequence. So a sequence starting from the number 1 would look like 1,1,2,3,5,8…and so on.

The Forex is especially sensitive to the fibs. If you spend any time with your charts you will notice how prices turn at or near Fibonacci numbers.

Now of course then numbers are not as neat and clean as 1,1,2,3,5 etc. In the they look more like. .236, .50, .382, .618, etc., Using this type of number sequence you will find that you can use the Fibs as a price point to enter or exit a position. They offer a seasoned a certain measure of predictive .

They can be used in you system as the response to other so if you get a signal that tells you to enter the long the Euro, then your mechanical response would be to wait until the prices broke through the next Fibonacci line and then enter your position. Waiting for this type of movement would help prove that the price was on the rise.

Of course this is assuming that you expect the price of the Euro to go up, and that is not the only way the could move, but this is the of the Forex, you can trade the up or down. It lets you make in both directions.

Forex Trading Style - Trendlines Versus Horizontal Lines

Saturday 25 October 2008

In developing a Forex style it is likely a will experiment with numerous over time but eventually end up with just a of favorites which are used on a .

The use of trendlines is taught in just about every course out there and popular opinion seems to suggest they should take a reasonably prominent place in any successful Forex style.

This article begs to differ. Yes, trendlines can be useful but in my opinion they are superseded by horizontal lines.

What is the difference?

Trendlines are simply lines drawn across the of bars or candles in an , or lines drawn across the highs of bars or candles in a downtrend.

One Forex style may use the Tom DeMark method of trendlines which gets very specific by joining the most recent low with the previous lower low (looking left on the chart) and then extending the line forward (looking right on the chart) for an .

For a downtrend join the most recent high with the previous higher high (looking left on the chart) and then extending the line forward (looking right on the chart). These trendlines then give indications of a breakout once they are broken.

Horizontal lines are simply lines drawn across highs and on a chart marking support and .

Why are horizontal lines superior?

The ideal Forex style is simple and easy to use and it helps if the charts we are studying are clear and reasonably uncluttered.

numerous trendlines can obscure what is really happening with price action. True, some traders just draw trendlines across main highs and and ignore the mini swings. Nevertheless, trendlines have to be constantly re-drawn and updated as price action continues.

On the other hand, just putting in a horizontal line on key levels of support and is simple and easy to see. They have great significance on the higher time frames, especially the 4 hour or the daily charts.

Of particular value is marking the previous day’s high and low and watching price action around those levels. It is possible to catch 10 to 20 often as price tests the previous day’s high or low and pulls back. Of course, the of a successful trade becomes higher if the previous day’s high or low also coincides with other factors such as a Fibonacci level or pivot point.

Why are horizontal lines probably more significant than trendlines?

When developing your Forex style it is very important to look beyond candles. is much more than that. The successful understands what is going on behind the scenes. Candles and price action is simply an outward manifestation of what is happening across the of thousands of traders across the who deal with of dollars worth of flows and orders.

A previous high or low in price action, especially on the higher , means that the bulls or the bears won the battle in that session. If a number of traders committed a large amount of equity to a at a certain price, then obviously that price point is going to be fiercely defended in the future by those traders.

So horizontal lines drawn across levels of support and mark very real points at which we can expect a reaction from price.

Trendlines on the other hand tend to be more speculative in my opinion. Watch price reaction at horizontal lines of support and as opposed to trendlines and you will notice that price respects key levels of support and more often than trendline levels.

Should trendlines be included in your Forex style?

That is an individual matter. They can certainly be helpful in offering confirmation of a trade after other factors. But to trade on trendlines alone can be very risky. On the other hand, it is possible to trade almost entirely on what support and tell you at certain times when key levels are being tested.

Generally though, a successful Forex style will a number of factors. My favorites in order of importance are:

  1. Support & levels on the higher time frames
  2. Fibonacci retracement and extension levels
  3. Pivot points
  4. Candle patterns
  5. 200 EMA (Exponential Average)

If you are in the process of developing your own Forex style you may arrive at a different priority list. Why not experiment with horizontal support and lines and trendlines and decide for yourself which gives the most reliable indication of ?
