The Raven Paradox - How Hempel’s Treatise Questioned the Scientific Process of Inductive Reasoning

THE RAVEN PARADOX - THE FLAWS IN THE SCIENTIFIC METHOD

HEMPEL’S All use reasoning and at some stage, to create hypotheses and design robust experiments. In a beautiful and elegant treatise, the German philosopher Carl G Hempel, in 1965, showed that there were flaws in these long-established processes. His Raven Paradox called into question the established processes of inductive reasoning, generalization and falsifiability

THE INDUCTIVE HYPOTHESIS Imagine that a scientist, after years of going for long walks in the countryside, observes that every single raven he has ever seen is black. As a dutiful researcher, he uses inductive reasoning to postulate the hypothesis:

“All ravens are black.”

This is a perfectly acceptable conditional hypothesis. , it is testable, because you could sample raven populations and verify that they are all black. The statement is also falsifiable because even one non-black raven amongst the sampled would disprove the hypothesis.

This is all great science, so far, following the established methods of inductive reasoning. The researcher could even design an experiment to sample raven populations, with thousands of ravens observed. If they are all black, the hypothesis is supported and plausible. Over time, repeated experiments and observations further confirm this and the hypothesis becomes accepted as a law.

THE PROBLEM OF GENERALIZATION AND FALSIFIABILITY The first part of the Raven Paradox proposal questions the process of generalization. It is practically impossible to sample every single raven in the world and there may a few non-black individuals. Hempel was not trying to comment upon the exact science, but as an interesting aside, about 1 in 10 000 raven eggs contain partially or fully albino birds.

Most albino birds are more visible to predators, suffer from and may be a localized . The of seeing an albino raven are very small and sightings are extremely rare. A researcher could sample many thousands of Ravens and not see one white bird, even though they do exist.

Thus, the of falsifiability is questioned and undermined by the Raven Paradox. Although the original hypothesis is technically falsifiable, in practical it is very difficult to disprove, because the chances of observing a white Raven are very slim. Even if you sampled the entire known of ravens, there may be an undiscovered group containing a non-black individual.

FLAWS IN THE INDUCTIVE REASONING PROCESS The next part of the Raven Paradox questions the processes of reasoning and deduction that are an integral part of the scientific process. When a researcher states that all ravens are black, the laws of demand that this conditional statement has a contrapositive, statement.

Therefore, according to inductive reasoning, “Everything that is not black is not a raven.” This means that every non-black object observed, that is not a raven, equally strengthens the hypothesis. There are a countless number of non-black objects in the universe and we should pity the poor statistician who has to analyze this!

To take the analogy further, another researcher in another part of world, through fluke, may have only seen one raven in their life, which happened to be white. Their deduced hypothesis may be that “All ravens are white.” Every non-white object, which is not a raven, strengthens this opposing hypothesis too. This is the Raven Paradox.

THE END OF THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS? What does this paradox mean? Has the world of science come crashing down around our ?

The answer is a resounding NO!

The Raven Paradox is a useful philosophical and helps to ensure that we constantly probe and test the steps of the established scientific processes. The examples given in the paradox are simplistic and unlikely, merely serving as an exercise to test the boundaries of the of science.

In reality, for the vast majority of cases, Hempel’s treatise makes no difference and the normal reasoning and experimental design processes perfectly well. The paradox does not detract from science, but actually enhances it, by preventing from believing that they have proved something beyond .

The Raven Paradox should remind every scientist of the dangers of generalization and that they must ensure that all hypotheses are realistically falsifiable. If the researcher has said, “All ravens in Norway are black”, this is more realistic as ornithologists could feasibly observe every raven in Norway.

PARADIGM SHIFTS Even long-standing theories, which became established as laws and immovable paradigms, can be proved incorrect over time. Science is really all about testing probabilities and . If something has a 99% chance of being correct then it should be accepted as the likely explanation.

The chances of someone seeing only one raven in their life, which happens to be white, are tiny. However, this is not the same as impossible and that possibility must never be ignored. This is why all experiments are rigorously validated and reviewed before gaining widespread acceptance, to minimize the effects of the Raven Paradox.

For example, Newton’s laws were accepted as until Einstein’s theories blew them out of the water. In turn, General Relativity is not the answer to fundamental physics and has been superseded by other theories.

This is how science evolves, by challenging and adapting established paradigms and laws. The creation of Chaos Theory was a perfect example of ‘maverick’ chipping away at the established laws until the theory could no longer be ignored. It eventually burst into the public consciousness and fractal appeared as prints on T-Shirts.

Hempel’s Raven Paradox stands to remind us all that no theory, however established, should be immune to challenge or debate. As new evidence is , science must adapt and change to assimilate the new data.

The Impact of Green Practices on Allergies, Asthma, and Even Cancer

Thursday 18 December 2008

A recent article spurred my reoccurring thoughts about the growth of what I think of as environmental diseases. As a Green Consultant trainer, I have often spoken of the rise of immune related illnesses that parallel our ’s increased use and fondness for chemical laced and petroleum derivative products. This report only added to my that we are cleaner and more sanitized, but we are also weakened by the products we use in our homes and offices. An AP medical report says,

“In 2007, approximately 3 million children under the age of 18 were reported to have had a or digestive allergy in the previous 12 months, compared to slightly more than 2.3 million children (3.3 percent) in 1997, according to the report from the U.S. Centers for Disease and Prevention.”

This same report says allergies are up by 18%, but similar trends are being seen in asthma. Asthma cases have more than doubled since 1980, and that is more than a issue. Some report that we are “too clean” and “too sanitized” to allow fetal and early childhood immunities to develop. Realize that the non-affected are eating the same , breathing the same air, and living in similar situations. So, why them and not me? Most of us are IMMUNE to these irritants and can tolerate repeated exposure without much more than minor discomfort. Others are not, and it seems that this is not just a sanitation or medical issue. I feel that we are continually wearing away our immune system, and it is not merely a dietary replacement or vitamin issue.

Every American, and even third-world citizens, live in a ” Toxic Soup ” when it comes down to Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). This invisible contamination may be like a fish that has gone too long between changes. The water is still wet, but it is filled with build of toxic substances that will eventually sicken and kill the fish. Every person knows that a healthy aquarium is a careful balance of ingredients and removal of toxins. Our is air, and it too can be filled with some pretty incredible . Did you know that formaldehyde is common in many construction material and , and that it outgasses for months into the air we breath? The smell of bleach, , new carpet, and new are nasty fumes called volatile organic compounds (VOC) that have proven acute and chronic health affects?

Into this same Toxic Soup, you must add the air fresheners, cleaning products, window cleaners, toilet sprays, detergents, sanitizers, and polishes that are frankly filled with multi-syllabic named chemicals that are potential health hazards. You will also find cigarette ash, arsenic, lead, dust mite feces and scales, pollen, pet dander, and dust particles of all types. We also anoint ourselves with cologne, , deodorant, cosmetics, hair spray, and body lotions that leave a trail of pleasant scents. We use bleach and ammonia products that are frankly dangerous products, and we sprinkle carpet deodorizer throughout house.

Bioaccumlation refers to the compounding affect of all these ingredients that are like layers of paint on an old house. It doesn’t make the house better, it just covers up the obvious flaws. Biomagnification means that some ingredients actually heighten the impact of other ingredients already floating around. In the end, we are like the fish trapped in a toxic of bad water. Breathing is one of the first indicators that something is wrong, will follow, and then comes a failing of health with illness and lethargy. These are symptoms that there is something wrong. Years ago when bowling alleys allowed smoking, I would get a splitting headache after thirty minutes in these places. After I left, so did the headache. Could it have been the air? Have you ever driven behind a diesel bus blowing black smoke at you as your behind it? Many get that same kind of acute headache that passes when they get back into .

Therefore, I have a theory that is supported by a good body of science which I cannot quote but clearly says that allergies, asthma, chemical sensitivity, ADD, ADHD, and other diseases like cancer and auto immune disease are hitting us more often because we have weakened immune systems. Our immune system is not weak from fighting the normal out there, but the artificial that hits it 24/7 and all year long. Though a theory, I feel strongly convinced that we are using chemical and petroleum-based products to such an extreme that it is killing us … or at least setting us up for the kill.

This may sound very “retro,” but there is a need to return to our grandmother’s way of cleaning. It may not have been as sanitary or beautifully-scented as your store-bought products, but it produced a healthier and more robust generation than now. Don’t be enticed by the that brag about being “New and Improved.” These products have been improved by adding yet another chemical that will likely further harm your family. Take some lesson from Naturally Green Clean author, and that anyone can clean their using just a few commonly available ingredients. Better yet, you will save a ton of while your family enjoys a respite from the toxic soup for a while.

Giving your family the gift of health is not a call to a higher level of cleaning, but a lower level of toxins that we all purchase at exorbitant prices. Does it amaze you that pay huge prices to buy cigarettes that are sure to kill them? In yet another fool’s errand, isn’t it that we that we are such addicts to cleaning products that smell pleasant but are poisoning us too. If what you are using to blind, scar, sicken, or kill you if your ingest it; why on are you bringing it to be spread throughout your ? Cleaning is not a technically difficult task. It does not require scrubbing bubbles, foaming action, or a 99.9% germ killing action. Natural and organic products are just as effective at cleaning, killing , and dissolving grease. Pick up a and learn how to give your family the fundamental gift of life by making the air they breathe safe. Your reward will be in the hardship and suffer that you will never see in life of the you .

Michael Richmond is the director of the Green Clean Institute, and highly recommends the book Naturally Green Clean that explains how to clean your naturally.

Conventional Cures Vs Natural Herbal Cure

Thursday 11 December 2008

According to the American Medical Association Journal, over
100,000 Americans die in every year due to side effects
from regularly prescribed medications. Throughout America, a
huge amount of medication is prescribed on a .

The medical community openly acknowledges that fact that it does not
have any cure for several common diseases that affect .
Most allopathic medicines have side effects that can range from
mild to severe. The for this is that most of these chemicals
have certain toxic properties. This is why there have been so many
prescription drugs that got pulled from the after enjoying
several years of FDA approval.

The sad thing is that very few nowadays bother to inform
patients about possible side effects due to close and cozy
with the pharmaceutical industries.

Half of the is that pharmaceutical companies will only tell
as much as they want to and not reveal the complete
picture. Therefore, the are not completely to blame because
they cannot warn patients against side effects of chemicals they are
not aware of.

The trouble is that the is so profitable is that these
medicine manufacturers are more concerned with and FDA
approval rather than the overall effect on the patients.

This is one why several are now beginning to
recommend complementary alternative treatments, like herbal
therapies and medicines.

Here are some interesting facts:

• The totally amount of annual made by pharmaceutical
companies through sale of drugs in the alone is
over $100 billion

• More than 25% of all prescription drugs available contain plant
derivatives

• More than 80,000 types of plants are used all over the world
for medicinal purposes

• Over 75% of the global depends on herbal remedies
for regular treatment

There are several available for who are looking for
alternative remedies, including Acupuncture, Yoga, Qigong, Tai chi,
Ayurveda, hydrotherapy, massage therapy, homeopathy, energy
medicines, holistic approaches, and aromatherapy. In fact, the
number of herbal remedies available for different ailments equals
(if not exceeds) the number of regular drug treatments provided by
pharmaceutical companies.

The point is that prevention always was and always will be better
than any cure, mainstream or alternative. The of herbal
remedies is that they move an individual towards a more
geared toward prevention and cure in the early stages of any
affliction.

Pharmaceutical drugs only after the problem has
development, they do not try to prevent problems because then the
manufacturing companies would go into a loss.

This is where herbal remedies leave the mainstream drugs behind.
This is also the why so many are daily turning to
herbal therapies.

Herbal remedies treat the cause of the disease and not the
symptoms (like conventional drugs). Herbal remedies also have
almost no side effects.

Mantle Cell Lymphoma

Sunday 30 November 2008

Examined under the microscope, the Mantle cell lymphoma appears as an expansion of the mantle zone area of the lymph nodes. It is represented by a homogenous of malignant small lymphoid cells, which are cancerous cells that from the bone marrow to the lymph nodes and spleen. They are different from the normal lymphocytes, they are not mature properly. Mantle cell lymphoma is a rare type of Non- hodgkin’s lymphoma.

The lymphocytes are white blood cells produced by the immune system of the body. Regarding their origin, there are two types of immune cells, the B cells which are made in the bone marrow and the T cells which are made in the thymus. After they are made they are eliminated in the lymph which is a clear liquid that bathes tissues and circulates in the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system in the place where occur the cancers known as lymphomas. If the B cells are affected there can be a Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma which include follicular lymphomas, small non-cleaved cell lymphomas (Burkitt’s lymphomas), marginal zone lymphomas (MALT lymphomas), small lymphocyte lymphomas, large cell lymphomas. In this category of diseases is included the mantle cell lymphomas too.

At the beginning, the MCL cells develops in limited areas. Regarding this aspect there are three subsets of MCL cells: the mantle zone type, the nodular type and the blastic or immature type. In the most cases these various types develop together and the diagnoses are of mixed mantle and nodular type. During the development of the MCL the non-cancerous mantle centers also become invaded by cancerous cells. In about 20% of these cases, the cells become larger and they are imature ones.

As it is initially slow-growing, this type of cancer it was first believed to be a low-grade cancer, but the average survival it was substantially shortened. Because of the mixed nature of MCL cells, specialists tend to give this disease a new classification. The of the blastic type of cells is considered as a high-grade cancer because it spreads at about the of other lymphomas belonging to that category. It is very important to describe the precise nature of these cells, because this may help specialists involved in the study of MCL to get to an agreement.

Mantle cell lymphoma affects persons with ages between 50 - 70 years and it is diagnosed more frequently in women. This type of cancer has the shortest average survival of all lymphomas.

Nowadays the cause of MCL is unknown. It has many symptoms that appears in other lymphomas too. Patients generally complain of fatigue, low grade fevers, night sweats, weight loss, anemia, rashes, digestive disturbances, chronic sinus irritation, recurrent infections, sore throat, shortness of breath, muscle and bone aches and edema. A more specific symptom is the spleen enlargement. This clinical aspect is present especially in the nodular type of MCL. An early stage is the swollen lymph nodes. At the beginning this has no explanation because the general health of the patient is good. Anemia is another syptom that characterizes MCL, but it is a mild type of anemia. Some patients can also report lower back pain and burning pain in the legs and testicles. In an advanced stage of the MCL the lymph nodes increase in volume, the general health is compromised and the symptoms become more pronounced. In the end stage the MCL spreads to the central nervous system and appear the neurological symptoms.

As MCL is very similar to several other lymphoma types, imunologic tests are recommended for a correct diagnosis. One of this kind of tests is Immunophenotyping which determine what kind of surface are present on cells, and which is the exact type of lymphoma, from a tissue sample.

When the diagnosis is sure it must be known that mantle cell lymphoma has already spread into many other tissues such as the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow or to the ring of adenoid, palatine and lingual tonsils at the back of the mouth or even to the tract. If the MCL spread to the colon it is diagnosed as multiple lymphomatous polyposis.

The treatment for MCL is established depending on the type of MCL and it stage.

There is no standard treatment for MCL patients. The patients diagnosed with MCL have been treated with surgery, radiation, single drug or combination chemotherapy and stem cell transplants. The most common chemotherapy regimens for treating MCL includes the drugs: Cyclophosphamide (cytoxan, neosar), adriamycin (doxorubicin or Hydroxydoxorubicin), vincristine (Oncovin), and Prednisone and it is called CHOP.

Studying your family’s genealogy you will and honor your ancestors and you will also find it interesting. It will help you learn many facts about your family, like why your grew from a place or other.

Foe example, way back in past, the American invaders have been fought by the Hessian soldiers who fought in the name of Great Britain. You may have in Pennsylvania provided you find out that one of your was a Hessian . Pennsylvania had a huge German-American , mostly Hessian soldiers. But later they left for of America deserting the Great Britain. There they joined the American regime. Some of their descendants have settled in Ohio, so you can also search there.

At times you may wonder why a certain first name dominates almost the whole family tree, original surname before the American alterations. Most of the names are found difficult to pronounce by the immigrant officers. Therefore change their surnames while undergoing the process. From the ancestors livelihood you can the real surname. Mostly the surnames were obtained from the type of ancestor’s occupation, for example, tanner, baker and so on.

Even medical condition are said to be passed on genetically from person to person. You can find out your medical histories once you find out your family’s genealogy. You can find out more about the medical issues with cancer, auto immune disorder, and and so on and so forth. Mostly we come to know about the through stories. Just in case you are not able to get any information, try searching the death notices which usually state the cause of the death. Therefore you will be able to take proper care of you and your health. Be more cautious of your eating, smoking and drinking habits if you happen to find out that cancer runs in your kin. This helps you to go through genetic tests.

If you are confused as to where to start with, and research materials from the genealogy library or genealogy associations are the best way. Joining genealogy association and groups can also help you as they have research materials for you help. They also hold genealogy parties. You can also buy and recently published on genealogy. Internet is another source of help. Usually genealogy enthusiasts gather information from research materials and join to interact with far off .

Where you get the information is not the question. It can be from the net or book or from other sources. No matter what, the goal is same, to the hidden past of your family by taking up the challenge.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Pflugerville, Texas

Monday 17 November 2008

Pflugerville is the name of a very rapidly expanding small city northeast of Austin, and there are many opportunities in the city of Pflugerville. The city was originally named for the Henry Pfluger family in 1849, and the city was first expanded after a dam was constructed in the 1850s on the Gilleland Creek which provided water for the and facilitated the construction of roadways. The small city is situated on the Williamson County and Travis County boundary, so there are parts of the city in both counties.

The plat for the city of Pflugerville was registered in February of 1904 by George Pfluger and his son Albert, and many of the wooden downtown structures on Main and Pecan were built by Conrad Pfluger in the early 1900s. The first cotton gin in the city was also built in 1904, but was destroyed by a fire in 1931, but rebuilt later on the same site. The first in Pflugerville was also administered by members of the Pfluger family in 1906, and it was named Farmers State of Pflugerville. Mr. William Pfluger was the first president, and the first cashier was Mr. A.W. Pfluger. Also, the Pfluger Press initiated weekly newspaper service in 1907, and continued printing until 1942 on a weekly basis.

The city of Pflugerville covers an area of 11.3 square miles, and is 14 miles northeast of downtown Austin, and the city has one body of water, Lake Pfluger, which was built in 2005 as a reservoir and city park. In the census of 2000, there were 16,335 reported residents and 5,146 in Pflugerville, but that number has steadily grown, and by 2005, the reported was over 27,000, almost double the 2000 figure.

In December of 2007, the city annexed a few residential neighborhoods, and the estimated following the annexation was over 35,000 inhabitants, including the new residents. With the recent expansion of the new toll road, State Highway 130, which runs through the city and intersects with State Highway 45 in Pflugerville, the city is even more accessible to Austin, as well as many smaller cities in the area.

The percentage of residents who are male is Pflugerville is about 49%, compared to 51% female, and the median value in the small city is around $173,000. The residents are more than average for a city in Texas, with the average median income being about $78,000 in the town, compared to about $44,000 for Texas in general.

There are three high schools in the area, although one is technically in Austin, but high school students in Pflugerville attend all three. Pflugerville High is the first and original high school, and Hendrickson High is in eastern Pflugerville, where there is a great deal of new development. Connally High is on the northeastern edge of Austin, but some Pflugerville students attend the school.

Most of the residences in or near downtown and central Pflugerville are older, historic homes on tree-lined streets, and there are three subdivisions, Brookhollow, Saxony, and Creekbend, that are connected to each other by the hike and bike trails that lead to and from the park, which the creek meanders through, alongside the trails. Most of the subdivisions in the newer, eastern area of the town are more modern and generic in style, so-called cookie-cutter homes. The Pflugerville in general provides an affordable alternative for buyers to the high prices currently found in the Austin .

There is a Holiday Inn Express in Pflugerville for visitors, and many other nearby , and diners can enjoy seafood in the town at Fish Daddy’s Seafood Inn while Mexican can be found at Casa Garcia. Hakata Sushi and Asian Grill is a popular spot for oriental , and Dazzle Coffeehouse is a popular spot for a coffee drink or hot cup of coffee.

Pflugerville remains a small city and therefore it does not have the same amount of attractions as larger Texas cities like Austin and Dallas. It does provide an option for looking for a city that moves at a somewhat slower pace but is still close to a larger city.

Escapeso Austin Realty is a small company operating in central Texas. Their website provides and commentary on Pflugerville and Austin real estate. Their website also has a graphical search of the Austin MLS.

Determining Simple But Helpful University Research KPI

Tuesday 4 November 2008

University research or key performance indicators are a set of yardsticks that help university managers and key personnel gather data, assess, manage, analyze, and produce a comprehensive graphic report about the performance of the organization. Indicators used in university research should be complete. In order for the university manager to come up with beneficial indicators, he or she must consider the four perspectives: external stakeholders, internal stakeholders, and , and growth and .

Not all data gathered in the university’s daily activities are to become KPIs. The manager must first check if these indicators actually occurred, are recent, and are -oriented. He or she must see to it these indicators are well balanced, consisting of both lagging and leading metrics, and should be based on the rates and volume. Every possible can be classified as revenue, , or access.

The choice of KPIs usually depends on the size of the institution. The greater the size of student , the more demanding the metrics will become. In some cases, classifications of indicators can even exceed more than three. Aside from the usual access, , and revenue-based KPIs, there are also indicators, like student access, enrollment yield, student , course or program , online course , percentage of new students earning a certain number of units, basic skills, transfer , volume transfer, volume completion, revenue factors, indicators, and indicators.

Under student access indicators, managers may use these KPIs: yearly student head count, student-adult participation rating, and percentage of help receivers. In some cases, enrollment yield indicators may fall under student access. This is because the data varies depending on the season or time of the year university accepts students from feeder high schools. For example, the of new students from all feeder high school for each university department may be higher than that of the of high school graduates that enroll at the institution throughout the fall following graduation.

Under student , managers may use the following KPIs: course rates, fall rates, basic skills, transfer rates, transfer volume, and awards and achievements.

Course key performance indicators usually involve data that pertains to the percentage of students who successfully completed the whole program. This group of indicators should cover all types of programs and courses, including vocational and online courses.

Considered also as course are indicators that pertain to the number of vocational and online students who acquire the same level of and skills, as those who take conventional courses. Basic skills, on the other hand, may involve three types of inputs. It may include the percentage of students that improve their skills of at least one level. It may show the course of the students on a yearly scale. In addition, it may cover the relation of basic skills course to all courses for a certain period.

The formulation of university research may appear complex on the surface. Actually, it is a simple process. All the managers should do is to align the possible indicators to the university’s vision, mission, , and strategies.

Internet Marketing Tips - Video Killed the Article Marketers

Wednesday 29 October 2008

Okay, not really. Article is more than alive and well. But let me tell you something, video is slowly becoming the king of online . You won’t find one top name who isn’t using video in some way to promote his products. And as technology gets better and better, the number of using video is going to increase dramatically, just like the number of now on broadband as compared to years ago. In this article, I’m going to explain why video has become so big, why you should use it and some to get really good at it.

Why it’s become big is simple. The technology is here and to watch things. If you think I’m kidding, just head on over to Alexa and take a look at what the number two site is on the Internet. That’s right, it’s YouTube. The only site bigger is , who happens to own YouTube. I wonder why? Maybe knows something that we don’t. Point is, video is huge. You can go to YouTube and look up just about anything at all and you’ll find it. I have been amazed at some of the I’ve found there.

Okay, why should you use it? Well, referring back to number one, the bigness of video, you’d be a fool not to. You’re going to probably get just as many watching your videos as reading your articles, if not more. Yes, there is a large of the that prefers to read. However, there are a number of who HATE reading but watching things. By NOT using video in your promotions, you are leaving out that of the . It’s really that simple.

As for , if you’re on a shoestring , you can do this cheaply. Download Open Office, which is free, and use the slide creation (similar to Powerpoint) to create a slideshow. Then, download Camstudio, which is also free, to create your video. If you can the cost, get yourself a camcorder and spring for Camtasia, which is the black tie of video creation programs. It’s not that expensive and it can do some amazing things.

In my signature is a of a product that will teach you some great video creation techniques.
